The Burslem Jubilee Project offers support, companionship and activities to all asylum seekers and refugees within the local community. We provide a safe, welcoming and non-judgemental environment in which attendees are able to experience companionship through interaction with individuals from similar communities. The project provides ESOL English language lessons, and IT is available to support their development and understanding of the English language. We have indoor and outdoor activities which include crafts, board games, nail art, male/female manicures and tennis at the local park. The project has taken attendees and their families to Gladstone Pottery, Blackpool, Southport and Rhyl and we are planning further family fun days.
The project is supported by the psychological, sexual health and asylum health teams, CAB and Arch. All these services refer individuals and their families to the project, and we welcome any new or resident asylums and refugees to come along and join the project.
The project leader is Sheila Podmore and is supported by caring volunteers. We transport the majority of attendees to the project and all have a good, healthy lunch which is prepared on site by our volunteer chef with the help of some attendees. This important project is needed as our attendees are on the periphery of society and their lack of social skills, learning opportunities and the connection with people from similar situations and cultural backgrounds impedes their psychological health, personal growth and the confidence which is required to successfully integrate into a strange and often hostile community. The project recognises that all individuals have to heal from their previous traumatic and often brutal experiences; we therefore are committed to giving all individuals time, support and loving care which is crucial to their healing and recovery. Currently many of our attendees are demonstrating increased levels of confidence, self-esteem, self-worth, and a healthier and more active lifestyle.
The project needs food, pampers, baby and adult clothing, which can be picked up on the same day and any donations towards the transporting of the attendees to the project.
